BOOK DESIGN + PRODUCTION:
20 Feelings in 2020
For my Extended Project Qualification, I combined my passion for book design and typography with my interest in the major world events of 2020.
Concept
2020 was an “interesting” year. We mostly saw the world through screens, which changed how we felt and understood things.
I created "20 Feelings in 2020" to show the real emotions behind the year's big events, I wanted to break through the screen and show what was real. This project let me explore book design and typography, turning digital ideas into printed pages.
BOOK DESIGN + PRODUCTION:
Selfless
I designed a A5 zine using the text from “57 Ways to Unlock Your Creative Self” by Rod Judkins. These images were created using a slow shutter speed photograph of a falling apple and a block of text repeating the work “time.”
Concept
For each chapter of the zine, I wanted to capture a single big idea.
In chapter three of “57 Ways to Unlock your Creative Self,” the title was “Keep Going...Even When You Can’t.” The example was the time it took Isaac Newton to consolidate his theories of gravity. “Newton’s idea that there was a force he later called gravity came to him in a flash when he saw an apple fall. He then spent years developing and improving the theory. I believe creativity takes time: to experiment and develop in order to solve the problem. I wanted to turn a falling apple into art as a way of capturing gravity visually. Using slow shutter speed, I created this image.
In chapter 8, the title was “Be extreme”. As a way of conveying abstraction and pushing boundaries, I used the text from that chapter and disorded the font to become more of an image then typography.
